tape over paint

I've searched and can't find the answer to my question - I may just not be searching on the right keywords. I am painting a wing and have put down my main coat, but I want to paint some details over the top. I plan to use tape to mark the areas off, but I don't want to pull up paint when I remove the tape. The paint that's already on the wing is faskolor white. Couple questions -

1. any particular tape I should use?
2. should I spray the wing with an enamel clearcoat first, will that protect the white from pulling up, and will the detail paint (fasfluroescent purple) adhere to the clearcoat?

Finally, I want to gloss the whole thing after I finish it. What should I use to do that? I'd like to get it as close in look to the body as possible.

Because it sounds like your painted on the outside, I assume this is a hard plastic wing as opposed to lexan where you paint the inside...

Once the faskolor has cured, heat it well with a hair dryer. then mist a light coat of clear rattle can (I use krylon). Once that dryes, use a light tack tape. Purple or blue painters tape or 3M masking tape if you can't get the painters stuff. I say 3M because I've had many problems with the others. After your design is done, heat set the wing again with the hair dryer (high heat BTW). Then back to clear. Mist two light coats and let dry. Then lay on two increasingly heavier coats of clear. The last coat should be so heavy that it almost runs.

HTH,

It's a lexan wing, I painted the top, not sure whether the top or bottom of a wing is considered the "inside". I painted the top because I figured the odds were that it would protect the paint on the sides of the wing, if it were on the "outside" of the sides it'd get scraped off first time I rolled it.

I was wondering which side of a wing to paint as well. I painted what bsoder and I would call the inside but for all the trouble, the only time I see it is when it is upside down. I was fearful that if I painted the 'outside', it would get scraped off in a heartbeat. How do you guys handle this?

You paint the wing from the bottom. Most bodies have side plates for the wing that you cut out of the wheel wells. You may have to remove the overspray film from the wing (if it has any on it) if it covers the bottom.

In my case the wing was purchased separately, ASC6182. It came exactly like this, no side plates, no film. Do the side plates get glued to the center, or am I misunderstanding?

Like Airboston said use a light tack tape, I prefer the blue painter mask or I may use some paint masks that stick to part of the painted portions. A hair dryer is a must have as the heat really cures the paint and I think helps it to stick better going on a warm surface.

hrm. for some reason my white faskolor paint didn't stick to the wing very well. I had no problems with it on the body, but on the wing it had several areas where it had cracked and shrunk - perhaps I put it on too thick, or the surface wasn't clean enough. the white paint had kind of a funny texture as well - it was much rougher than the purple fasflourescent I put down first, which was very smooth. The white paint was almost gritty feeling. Is that normal?

Fortunately the body turned out nicely, I've stripped the wing completely and I'll try it again.
