W.E.D. Custom painting pics and Q&A

Just dropping in to add a place for people who like to check out paint work. Also wanted everyone to know, if I can help with any questions(Or get some answers myself) this is the place.

I use Pactra mostly, but have started using AutoAir and H.O.K. as well as Pactra Acrylics.

Here are some pics from this weeks work...

Thanks for looking!

...Jim

I have a question
How do you like HOK? I have considered using some but i do mostly racing and feel that Faskolor/Creatix offers the best flexible paint for this application. Is it a hard or soft paint when dry? Does it chip like Spaz-Stix?

John, I sent an email, thanks!

Ironoutlaw, thanks for looking, let me know if you have any questions at all!

Respirology, I have only used HOK a couple of times. I like the color selection, it seems comparable to AutoAir, which is my favorite for colors and durability so far. I use mostly Pactra, but color selection is limited and it is too expensive.

do you "pro" level painters hand cut your masks (the drips, flams, and tears) or do you have a vinal cutter that makes them for you? i have been getting better at painting, but my hand cut masks look like crap.

Jim, I noticed you find it btter to paint before you cut out the body. Just curious as to why, is it so you have something to hang on to and not have to worry about grabbing a part that is painted?

Savagekid94, the carbon effect is done with shelving rubber from WalMart. Hold up against the surface and spray away. They use a contrasting color to finish it off. 3 different blues, black and silver, two different reds, etc. All work great, or even pearl on one section, using the same colors.

HPI Freak, They are all hand cut with a fresh exacto #11 blade for each body. Be careful not to cut too hard, since it makes the bodies crack if overdone.

Hope this helps,
Jim

Mark R., I prefer to cut the body out after, since the customer is better off mounting it to their own car, since even from one sedan to the next of the same brand, there are still variations for example. Wheel bases are different with just changing castor blocks, or rear toe, etc. Tire diameter, etc. All different.

The other reasons are overspray and handling the body during painting is easier when it is intact. Even applying liquid mask is more tedious on pre timmed bodies, since it rolls over the edges, etc.

I cut with scissors up to the line, but not past and finish every body off with a dremel tool, to avoid scratches.

Hope this helps!

It's been a while since I ask you a question (last time I asked you a Q on rctech about 5 months ago), I have been wondering, how do you like the water based paints (last time I was talking to you about them, and now I am asking how you like them)? lol

Jim, Carbon read my mind. I am currently deciding between an airbrush and knowing whether I will be using water based paints or lacquers will decide which airbrush I go with. With that being said are the water based paints just as good as the lacquers?

Thanks in advance

After reading your thread I think you found the answer. lol. I only use water based paints (I gave Jim some info a while ago about them), and I do use a few differn't brushes one is the CR, and then I have a peak (rich pen) c5 (has a .3mm tip), and then a Pas. VL for back up and large coverage (I have the 1mm tip on it right now). The WB paints spray great through the CR (.5mm tip), but like dave said in your thread they will need to be thinned down to spray good through the smaller tiped brushes.

As for the paints WB will never spray as good a the lacquer based paints, although with a little pratice the WB paints can be used to do some great things. The biggest thing with WB is that they are thicker, the paint particals are a little bigger when they come out of the gun, although you can get them to spray finner by thining them down. The only down side is that they cane blow around easier as they don't dry as fast as the lacquer paints (another reason lacquers work great for detail work).

Carbon, after all the downsides you list to the water-based paints, why do you only use them specifically? Now I am second guessing my desicion to go for water based paints.

Don't do that, as the water based paint works great, just each has there down sides it is really only a minor differnce with way they work.

Water based paints work really great when used right.

Mark, Like Carbon said, I completely agree, the WB paints I use, are for more color choices. I think I will always favor the Pactra and now some KK(HOK new stuff), over the WB paints. The durablity and sprayability is just enough better to be noticable in the finished product up close, especially when it comes to shading.

Each has it's place though, so I have about 4 brands of paints now I work with, keeping Pactra first still though.....I am leaning more towards Auto Air for WB paints....and the new Kustom Kolors(Enamel it seems like) are being tried as well though.

Unfortunatly, mostly trial and error, which is how I did it. We won't get into the details, but I have invested nearly thousands in paints and experiments i'm sure over the years.
