My New Toy

From 1991 to 1997 I worked as a service writer and then assistant parts/accessories manager at a dealership that sold Honda, Yamaha & Suzuki motorcycles and atvs and Ski-Doo, Yamaha and Polaris snowmobiles and watercraft.

During that time I got to drive almost every model motorcycle those manufacturers made during the 80's up until I left in 1997. One of my favorites was the Honda Magna VF750C, a V-Four 750cc cruiser.

Honda pulled the engine out of the VFR750, added 2 more carbs, now a total of 4 carbs, 1 for each cylinder and built the latest in their Magna line which started in the early 80's.

I loved this bike, it was smooth, no buzzy-vibration, no crap-your-pants headshake over 100mph, with cruiser styling but an engine pulled out of a race bike.

Well, I've owned several bikes before my kids were born. I haven't had one for about 14 years now, and out of the blue my wife says "I think we should get another motorcycle". Of course I didn't need to be told twice.

There were a few bikes I was looking for, and the magna was at the top of the list. My first color choice was yellow, then red or black. After searching local ads and craigslist I finally found this one in my price range a mere 130 miles from home. A road trip with the wife n' kids, a 30 minute test drive and comprehensive visual inspection of the bike and I plunked down the cash and she was mine!

1995 Magna, aside from a small scratch on the front fender, it looks showroom new.

I had an 84 vfr, and my buddy had the 85 magna, both 500cc variants. I always wants to try one of the bigger bikes.

You're not kidding. Shmucks in cars just don't seem to see people on bikes. I already put the rear tire into a slide to avoid an idiot in a saturn pulling out of his driveway in front of me. Fortunately, I remembered to ignore my instinct to release the rear brake and I finished the slide, otherwise I may have been looking at a high-side and getting tossed off the bike. Anyway this moron just waves at me and keeps on going, he got a rude surprise when I pulled up to his window at the next stop sign and said about all I could without breaking the law.
