Motor
Hey guys I am new to rc boats. I have been working on a custom deep vee that is 58" long. right now I just finished the fiberglass mould. My question is what motor should I use to run it. At first I thought of using an Airplane engine Cuz I have some lying around, Then I also thought of using a grass trimmer. If you can plz let me know what I could use. Thanks

A trimmer would work, but your best choice would be something like a Zenoah G260pum. What is your budget for a motor? This page ( http://www.bhhanson.com/Marine%20Eng...ct%20Line.htm_) gives you an idea of what is availible for boats, ranging from the $250, 2.5hp stock zenoah, up to the 7.5hp Quickdraw (~$800). Any would work for your boat.

As I said, a trimmer engine would work. You probably wouldn't get the performance out of it, and being aircooled, you'd want an open boat (i.e. - without a hatch), but it could work. As for the plane engine, what size? Most airplane engines would be woefully underpowered in a boat designed for the same size engine, but it might work. Also, with a plane engine, you'd have to leave it hatchless for the cooling.

Hey thanks alot I think that I am just going to save up some money to buy one of the good boat engines. If you don't mind I have one more question, Where is the best place for the prop shaft to come out of the hull?

Check out SIKK engines at http://www.oneillbrothersracing.com/. You can get a watercooled cylinder for it too. Much cheaper then the Zenoah's. (i've got one)

Yes, they are cheaper. As long as you don't want more than about 4hp (the 29cc), they will work fine. They are probably (i've never owned one, so this is a guess, correct me if I'm wrong, dd)not quite as high revving as the Zenoah, but more torque. Do you have a pic of the boat you've been working on? Finally, if the reason for going with the good engine is for the watercooling (so you can run it with a hatch), the Sikk's are good motors, but are aircooled. As for the prop shaft, you want a surface drive. This will exit at the bottom of the transom (not out of the bottom of the boat).

Chris, the first thing I touched dealing with the SIKK was the RC230 upgrade to a 27 w/ watercooled cylinder. Nice set-up but not as compact as the PUM motors. For comparison, yes, the 29's are torque monsters but the 27's are are neck & neck w/ 260 numbers.
In the near future, there will be a SIKK that looks like a twin to the PUM motors but MUCH, MUCH cheaper. Problem some are saying is that it will be a two bolt head instead of the four.

This is just the mould and I still have some work to do before the Fiberglass is put on, but you get the idea.

Oh and just to let all of you know, this boat is completely custom no kit was used. I hope it works the way I want it to lol...
