Universal 1/8 Scale Conversion Motor Mount

After numerous requests for this, I've decided to go ahead and start producing them. First I would like some input as to exactly what you guys want. Here is the base model, which I'm currently using on our Truggy. It has a 1/2" thick base, with a 3/16" thick motor mount portion. In the bottom are 2 M5 tapped holes. It has 3/4" of motor adjustment range for different gear options. The holes are as low as possible to keep the CG closer to the chassis, but also it's high enough to allow for the largest diameter brushless motors.

So what would you like to see changed before I start making these?

That's awesome that your going to start producing these. It beats me trying to dremel out some crude mount.

One thing that would be cool is it could be installed on either side of the diff. I think I would put it on the right side others may put it on the left. Maybe it's that way already, I don't know. Other than that it looks like it could be very versatile.

I also liked your Ofna MBX diff/motor mount version, but there are probably too many diffrent diff versions out there to make that practical.

I'm looking forward to the final product.

I like the MBX style one too, but I can't make it work for everything like you said. Why can't this be used on either side of the diff?

I wasn't sure if it could or couldn't.

I just meant that you could have a flush (straight) cut on both the right and left sides of the mount. That way it would be flush with the diff on either side It might make it slightly easier to produce too!

It looks like like it would work in its present form just fine though and I would buy one today.

I would like a larger plate to bolt to the chassis so four screws could be used to hold it tight. Somehting like what I had a machine shop do for me. Heres a pic....

I could do something like that, but it requires me to use thicker material and mill out a lot more. I don't know if cost will justify the extra rigidity. The 1/2" base is already VERY strong and rigid.

Well considering you are going to be using this in 1/8 scale models there is going to be some very powerful motors hanging on it. I was worried about flex in my mount but it turns out the chassis flexes alot more than it does.

So what type of price are you expecting?

$20 for the 1/2" thick base model. It would probably jump to $30 for a 4 screw base.

What about having the motor mounted above the center rear dog bone, this way the batteries can lay down the left and right side of the chassis and on the chassis and not the side guards.

I don't think that would work. The motor will not be able to get close enough for the pinion to make contact with the spur without hitting the dogbone itself.

You've proved me wrong! I guess the only drawback would be the higher center of gravity. What does everyone else think about this type of design?

I don't think you could make a "universal" mount by doing that. When I made a mount like that on my buggy out of 1/8 6061-T6, it got badly bent from just minor jumps, even though I secured it in 3 different places. This sort of thing could cause a spur gear to strip (if the plate flexed/bent enough).

Considering a gear is round, its symmetric on all sides. Thus if you can't get close enough without hitting a dogbone from the top, you'd have the same problem on all the sides.

I really like the motor in the center design. It allows the driver to stack large symmetric battery banks on either side. Nimh batts are heavy and could help offset the high motor.

The ideal design would suppose a motor from both front and rear. Thats probably not going to happen, so the next choice is a rollbar to stop any direct hits to the motor. Its definately a more complicated design, but for someone looking for wicked cell counts and long run times, the extra battery space might be worth it.

Will the motor mounted up even fit under the body? I wonder about the durability issues then, leaves the motor to take damage in a roll.

True true, it'll need to be protected, and likely won't fit under a buggy body.... but on the flip side you'll have a full chasis to lay batteries on.

Anyway, the existing mount looks good. Will there be any template to help align the mount? Looks like you'll have to drill 2 new holes in the chasis, it'd be nice to get it right the first time.

He means some sort of guide for drilling the holes. Yes, I could provide one of those. I could have the first batch made in a week or so...

The motor will fit under the body. At least mine did when I had it like that. I have found that stacking batteries on one side, when tall enough, will cause the body not to fit.

Okay, I'm going to make a quick batch of 1/2" base mounts. I've been doing some tests, and 1/2" seems to be quite solid enough for any kind of motor you can fit on a buggy chassis. Hopefully I can do them Thursday...

We'll see how well this design works, and maybe try out some of the vertical mounts in a couple weeks.

I would like to buy one of these, but only if it is is a direct fit for the Hyper 7 Pro. I should only have to drill the set screw holes in the chassis to make it work. Let me know.

I've now got two 3/8" base models if anyone is interested. $15 shipped each. I am out of 1/2" material right now, but I should have some more in a week.
