Hi chris, Yes it's cool that you are now a RC boat modeler. I myself a biginner and I joined this forum recently. Members here are friendly and willing to help you as much as they can. We all were at one time!
Great, you found a site where you can get your questions answered so bring them on.
Being new to boating or R/C altogether you will have lots of them and we should give you some good honest answers.
We need fresh meat in here to keep the site active and remember, there are no stupid questions as long as they are serious.

Now that I see this sport picking up. Contact your local hobby shop and make sure they start carrying some 50-65% Nitro to make these boats scream! Buying 4 gallons at a time is not really feasable for me. Now, when the 55 gallon drum comes out on the other hand............

Well Chris, you're not cool yet as if you have a boat on 49 Mhz, it's still considered a toy and not hobby quality. You'll probably end up by making it garbage can filler after a few runs.
Yeah, you gotta start somewhere I guess but the department store stuff is a waste of money.
Don't give up yet as one day you'll be Too Cool Chris.

There's nothing at all wrong with being new to the hobby. Unfortunately some people seem to forget that. My learning curve went way up when I finally broke down and got me one of these computer thingy's.
There's nothing that beats having an experienced person by your side but we're the next closest thing.
What helps here and on similar forum sites is that you can ask tons of questions and get honest answers.

While that is true Ron, you have to also pick out the good info from the bad. You will see some newer boaters saying to do this or that because they did it. In many cases, they got lucky and didnt' ruin a boat or engine. My biggest pet peeve is bench running an engine. I blew one up running it without the boat being in the water. If you see someone saying to bench run a boat to break it in, ask them how long they have been running boats because I'll bet they are fairly new themselves
