Auzzie sets 1/5 scale speed record @117mp

It is unofficial but a Auzzie has set a new speed record for 1/5 scale at 117 mph. This was done with stock gearing , when he gets his custom gearing I believe he will hit 120mph. Here is a link to the video

I have a little bit of trouble believeing this isn't an edited video...

The Baja is something like a 38mph car out of the box, with the engine topped out likely somewhere around 12,000-15,000rpm. Let's assume 12,000rpm conservatively.

117mph/38mph = 3.07x the speed of a stock car.

Since the gearing is stock, the engine has no choice but to spin 36,840rpm unless something else is going on like huge tires or another gearing change.

Besides that, the camera recording looks bizarre. Why not stand at the timing lights during the run?

Still a cool video though!

First off the motor is not a stock hpi motor. It is a Modified BZM 50cc putting out about 15 hp. And it can rev to 20,000 rpms. You maybe right about the gearing but he is getting some custom gearing to make it faster. Video quality is kinda poor for this video because it was taken by a cell phone. You can tell the car is going super fast because it is just a blur and passes thru the camera frame very fast. The time traps verify the speed but to have the camera setup right by the speed traps is going to make the car even more of a blur with less time in the camera frame.

I have a lot of experience with 1/5th scale cars and This is totally within the realm of possibility. These cars with the right engine/gears/tires are capable of extreme speeds given the room to wind out.

Keep in mind the official record Skopod Speed run from last year 97+ some mph was set from a dead stop on an official race track. That car is very well capable of excessive speeds but was restricted to the length of the track set up that day and problems with keeping the tires on the car.

There are some really powerful 1/5 scale motors like BZM , Zenoah , Skopod. And some really great engine modders like OBR . The inline twins by OBR are monsters and SO is the BZM 50cc . A engine modifier is also offering a custom made BZM 70cc!! There is a horsepower war a brewing in 1/5 scale.

I don't doubt it's possible! Just with stock hpi gearing, I just don't see any large engine like that spinning 36,000+rpm. It's just way over the top!

Video looked very fast for sure. I'm usually a good judge of speed and the video sure looked like a 100+ pass. I just also know some people are pretty good with editing.

Just have to understand the skepticism. Look forward to the 120+ pass! Very impressive if true.

Well I am sure you are right about not being stock HPI gearing that comes with the kit . However you can tell by the pitch of the engine that the car was hauling asss. Video quality I think it was the camera used a cell phone. Maxit has done other videos at 105, 112mph that are of better video quality, you can see them on youtube. You kinow this is a scooter motor basicly so he can custom gear it to the moon. The only problem is the tires I don't believe they will hold up when he gets pass 120mph. And speedtraps usually don't lie

I would like to know what the skopod car would do on a flying run. I have no doubt it would surpass this record. But that car has a totally custom made 62cc engine runing nitro/meth and a specially designed 2 speed.

In case you havn't seen it before here it is

The car has been redesigned with a new (Hand made) engine and wheels for this years speed runs!

Yup that is it!! It is a nitro/meth engine??!! In my opinion it was the tires that held you back. Since you address that issue I hope you go to this years ISC Championship. With tires that hold up and a running start you should beat your old record.

Yes it is a very custom purpose built high compression motor. I want to say they were running it on 30% nitro but I could be wrong. The motor they built for this year is even more of a monster. But I will let Skopod Chime in on that when they are ready! They have a solution for the tire problem also!

Good Luck guys with your speed attemps. I hope you get to do alot of testing with different setups so you can get the best tires for traction. That motor of yours has got to be a BEAST runing on meth & nitro!!!

That isn't my car it was made by a company called SKOPOD. They are the designers of the 62 cc engine for Large Scale rigs. And yes they had a specially designed 2-speed from Baja Skunkworks on that car.
They will be at RCX again next weekend showing it off.
