Fly Sky Radio Myth or fact

Ok here is something I am trying to wrap my brain around. I got back into rc racing after a 20 yr break. I am low budget and bought a flysky radio and am loving it its cheap and has alot of bang for the buck.

I have 1 or 2 guys that I race with saying they are being banned and some local events the club i race with has not said anything about them.

The rumor is they cause interferance with some radios. I HAVE NOT FOUND PROOF OF THAT.

As a mater of fact the only thing i have heard are hearsay and that the glitching issues people are having is a spectrum receiver.

I have a feeling there are a few people out that that feel like they have been cheated because they bought a $400 dollar radio and the fly sky $40 almost as good.

Please help me as I am trying to find out if there is any data to back up the claims made by a few people or are they accualy just spreading rumors?

All I can add here is more anecdotal stories.

Around... 2 years ago, maybe 3, I switched from a FM Hitec over to a 2.4 Hobbyking radio. Super cheap radio, with rock solid performance. I took it to the parking lot races at LHS, and the guys using Spectrum radios were having glitching issues. My buddy had the flysky, GT3 I think.

We were solid. But the spectrum guys seemed to think their issues were from our radios. I was unsympathetic.

I'm still using my cheapo radio, and haven't had any issues since. I'm not exactly a regular at the track, but I race at least 6 times a summer. I've been to some really large events, and never had an issue...

Well thats just it, I've never had a single glitch out of my cheapo setup. But I've seen those spendy spectrums glitch up.

I think its a myth that my cheapo radio would cause the interference, but.... just like you, I've heard the same complaints.

Ha! Myth!!!!! But a funny one. Haters will always hate! I rock the FS GT3, and love it!

I have one,an it seems fine to me,I dont race but never had issues.
Also,my KM baja came with one eccept its 2 ch an never had issue
with it either...

I have, and have had both the fly sky, and tried different "$400" type radios. While the fly sky is good for its value and was great for me at first and especially for those new to the hobby, there is absolutely no comparison between the two. You will see better lap times and feel smoother with the better/expensive radio's. That's my first hand experience, and it's b/c I wanted to know and experiment weather the difference in expense to performance value between the radio's, actually warranted the price differences. Yes, most expensive radio's are worth the difference. You see it simply in lap times imho. I didn't believe it at first either, but that was till I did the experiment.

A lot of the crawler/scaler guys run GT3B's with various hack mods and have no interference issues that I've heard of. Mine works fine, and with the number of vehicles I have, the receivers are far, far easier on the wallet. Only complaint is it does feel a bit cheap (especially the wheel mount) but it IS cheap, so I can live with it, and i never notice it when wheeling. Ergonomics are good.

Think you are getting some "snobbery" from the local track. Partly why I don't bother racing anymore. I'll gladly trade that scene for the woods and creeks of the scaler scene.

There's a few of those radios running around here... I've never had any problems at all, let alone any that could be tied to them.

I've run the GT3B radio all the time, and against various other radios in races and while bashing. My son uses it mainly and my radios have not had any glitch problems what so ever. That being said... people are looking for a reason they are having problems and why not blame the inexpensive radio that they look down upon?? Haters gonna hate... and glitch occassionally... haha.

Actually, I think there might be a little truth to it, but I believe it's more a matter of weakness on Spektrum's part. That's why I moved away from them & bought a Futaba 4PL, and I haven't had a single glitch since...

Thats the funny part. Both I and the OP had the Spectrum guys mad at us. No one else cared.

I'm still not drinking the kool aid on the spendy radios... but the increased adjustability of my TQi is nice. I bought TRX receivers for the fleet... I'm going racing tonight, but the SC10 is still on the cheapo radio...

I'll switch it tonight... last time at the track I didn't have enough braking, and I really like expo steering on the Xo and the ERBE... but I've never had the chance to try it on the SC10.

Who knows, maybe I'll do better tonight... with any luck I'll get to race in expert.

Well, don't feel alone, because I'm not that fond of spending alot on a radio either, but sometimes the faith I have in a particular manufacturer is worth something to me, & there are some good radios that can balance performance, reliability & price pretty well. My Futaba 4PL only cost me $200, & extra recievers are only about $40-60(that's as good or better than an equivalent Spektrum piece), & from what I've seen & experienced, I trust Futaba MUCH more than I do Spektrum, so to me, it was worth the money I spent(this thing is even easy on its batteries, I got a LiFe pack for it, & I haven't had to recharge it yet, haven't even seen the radio's voltage go down any since I first charged it up about 2 months ago). I think it's likely all the radio I need....

I have a GT3 that came with my KM5B, I also use it with my GS Storm SUT with no glitching.
For the money it is a great radio.
My only complaint is it eats batteries like they are going out of style.

yes, i used the GT3C on my kyosho superten. it have a good performance when i use the futaba s3050 servo.

I personally own right now a futaba 3 pk and the 4pk and a spektrum dx3s,dx7 and I
my 2 sons and 3 grandsons run them all at the same time. Basically racing against each other. I use my Flysky 2.4 because my kids think that It makes a better driver. I recoreded
the Lap times as we changed controllers over a 3 day period, so my sons wouldnt realize
"my little experiment". If they knew that the lap times were almost exactly the same
they would tend to argue with me. (Final Thought) I don't see or feel any big difference.

There is several guys at my local track with the fly sky and there has been no issues. Can't beat the price. What I like the most is it fits well in the hand. This coming from a guy that has not tried to many other radios that were not stock with a kit.

I think I may have to pull the trigger on a GT3, as I need a decent radio for my crawlers that I won't stress over if it gets dirt or a little damp. I'm actually just using the 2 channel 2.4g Tactic that came with my UL-1 hydro in my SCX10. The Tactic works perfectly, and I like that it has NO external rx antenna to get yanked in to the spur or axles. The downside is the lack of adjustment, and lack of additional channels. It also feels very cheap.
I've been a gear snob from the moment I could afford to buy all my own equipment - always had the best radios, servos, esc's, etc... One child, two divorces, and a rough economy have opened my eyes to all options, lol. My primary radio is now a Futaba 4PL - great fit & finish, feels great, and has every feature I'd ever need, for half the cost most of the other radios I've owned. I've been skeptical of the GT3, but it's hard to ignore all the positive reviews.

Just ordered one of their 6 channel heli radios for one of my scale projects. That's a project in and of itself. Looking to order another GT3 for my on road fleet as well, they are all still AM.

for what the gt3b can be made to do,theres no reason to run anything else.theres no other land radio out there that can compete with a hacked gt3b in price or performance.
10 model is no big deal, but up to 8 channels on a pistol grip. runnin scalers,you can never have enough channels.
mines not hacked yet, but its gonna be

overkill rc has everything you'll ever want for it. hes working on a gt3c hack and other mods now

i with old_schllo, they can keep all the race track headaches. leave me with my blazer scx10,couple 5700mah saddle packs and 6 or 7 waters in my backpack,ill wonder through the woods all day

Ha! Spent an hour last night out back hiding from the visiting MIL..had a charged up 4k pack, GTB in hand, a reclining lawn chair, cooler of beverages to prop my feet on, radio playing next to me, and spent some quality time wheeling on my ORV course. Most relaxing thing I can think of.
