MIP or Odonnell CV Head

Which one is better, or is there a big difference between the two?

I've run the O'Donnel but not the MIP. The O'Donnel is far & away the most popular, but that doesn't mean that the MIP is not good also. I believe the O'Donnel is a lot lighter, & yet cools very well. Judging from the looks of the MIP it probably cools well also. Performance wise, it would be hard to evaluate fairly. So much of performance is tuning, & I doubt that one head or the other makes a huge differance in hp. It's mostly about cooling & weight. It's hard to go wrong with the O'donnel.

Both heads work great to help cool the engine better. The O'Donnell head is actually larger then the MIP head, so it should be a bit better at cooling.
Performance wise, both are about the same. I'm sure you'd be happy with either one.

Actually the head does nothing to horsepower. It may cool better than the stock head but there is absolutely no data to support that. OS would not put a head on their engine that did not cool the engine properly and offer max horsepower. The only problem is that most people hate the way it looks. I got the ODonnell and bought it from NationalRC. The have a website and a phone number is listed on their site. If you use an ODonnell head you must use McCoy plugs and not OS plugs.

dirtdevil,

I thought the stock OS CV head was cast aluminum. If it is, then a machined aluminum head will dissipate the heat better and the engine will run cooloer.

As far as increasing power, I have no idea.

I just ordered a .15cvx and an Odonell head, why do I need to use McCoy plugs instead of OS? Is it the length of the plug? I run MC59's in my .12spd so it would be nice if I didn't have to switch to another brand.

thanks
Jay

Dirtdevil, OS put that head on their CV's because it was cheaper to manufacture, & could sell more engines at the reduced price.
When they 1st came out it wasn't too hard to find them at $70. The CZZ engine that preceded the CV cost quite a bit more mostly because of the heads machining. The Hyper CV that came out after the std CV also cost quite a bit more. So why do YOU think OS put that head on the CV? Joe

I have a Duratrax head on my CV. It works well and is only $20. Get the standard blue one not the stage 2 or whatever.

If Ace is out of theirs, try out Nitrohouse.com and call their order hotline. I got mine there, and they deal directly with Steve O'Donnell (or so i'm told)

ODonnel head

Actually, all of the O'D heads I have bought have had an approx .010 deeper spigot depth than the stock OS head, thereby raising compression. Unless you compensate with a thicker shim pack. The potential for more power is there with more comp, more cooling, leaner mixture.

I did back-to-back testing of several heads for the OS 15CV a while back and the O-Donnell made noticeably more power than the OS Hyper and Powerline heads I compared it to (same needle settings, same car). I repeated the testing twice with the same results. Sorry, I did not test the MIP head.

I may be able to answer this question.

The OS glow plugs are meduim glow plugs and to get the maximum preformance boost from the new heatsink you will need a long glow plug.

you can remove some shims (If you can) to increase the compression but you will need a colder glowplug so that you get proper timing.

(I read this somewhere)

Anyone tried the nitro specialties heads? I have one on my v01b and love it. I'm not sure however how the .12 version of these heads are.

Nitro Specialties head

I have a NS head on the 15 CVR in my TMaxx (bump start chassis). Running at night the thing actually overcooled. I finally got it running about 210 but when the tank level got lower later in the heat it nosed over lean on the long straight. I wound up cutting the top fin off and this has temps right in the ballpark. This head appears to have nearly twice the cooling area of the stock OS head. It would probably be gold for running daytime.
