Just got back from the hobby shop. Picked up my son the 5803 slash. What is a good charger and batterys i should pick up? The charger that came with it takes waaaaay to long. Its the same charger that came with my tmaxx for the EZ START.

I like Duratrax Onyx chargers they are reasonably priced and work well. Batteries well there are a billion different kinds now. That truck should have come with a 7 cell nimh battery. If you want more batteries get the same 7 cell type packs. Only real difference in them is the mAH rating. Higher the mAH the more oomph the pack will have.

These days most batteries are made from the exact same cells.

If you want to switch to LiPo batteries, go to HobbyPartz.com and get a Thunder charger and Gens Ace batteries. If not Traxxas batteries will do. Or you can get more inexpensive batteries from CheapBatteryPacks or OnlyBatteries.

Traxxas has a new quick charger. Honestly there are tons out there that can be had for cheap. I really liked my Duratrax Piranha charger for NiMH batteries, but honestly at $50 it's overpriced these days. The Thunder AC6 charger is about the same price, but it's much better because it can also balance charge LiPos and can even charge lead car batteries.

Get this:

I've had mine for 2 years, awesome charger. As far as batteries go, I'd recommend this:

Since you'll be spending more than $50, free shipping from Hobbypartz.

Question Roderick

About how much run time do you get with one of those batts?

also how long is the charge time? and will the battery plug right up to his slash or does it need a specific connector?

sorry for all the questions! I run nitro so i know nothing about electric.

Just be aware that Lipo batteries can be dangerous. If you have a young child operating and charging batteries stick with nimh!!!

In my 2wd Slash with a 3200 KV, 540 sized Tacon brushless motor and 24/86 gearing, I get about 45 minutes of run-time just bashing around and going over jumps. LIPOs are incredible, there is no comparison to NiMH at all. LIPOs pretty much give you full "punch" the whole time while NiMHs start to lose power a couple minutes after use. Just be sure your speed controller has a low voltage cutoff feature because if you drop the voltage too much with a LIPO battery it will "puff" and get ruined.

As far as charging time, you can adjust how fast you want the charger to push electricity into your battery. The faster you do it, the harder it is on the battery. On a 4000 Mah pack, I like to charge at 3 amps. Takes about 1.5 hours or so for a full charge. Finally, as far as connectors go, the batteries from Hobbypartz.com tend to come with 4mm bullet connectors. I really like them and use them on all my stuff but your son's Slash probably has Traxxas connectors which are not included with the Thunder charger. You can easily solder yourself an adapter or change the connectors to suit your preference however. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Check your owner's manual and make sure your XL5 speed control has a "low voltage cutoff". If so you can safely run Lipo batteries. If not stick with Nimh batteries until you upgrade to an ESC with Lipo cutoff or low-voltage cutoff.

Lipos have several advantages that make them well worth the extra cost.

1. You can charge them with no "cool-down time" You can put a lipo back on your charger as soon as you finish a race. A typical 5000mah lipo will only take 15 to 20 minutes to recharge after a 5 minute race. That means you only need one lipo for racing.

2. Lipos hold a charge much longer than nicads or nimhs. A lipo you charged last week is still fully charged.

3. Lipos are much lighter than Nimhs cells for better power to weight ratios.

4. But the best advantage is their ability to push large amounts of amps. That typical (and inexpensive) 5000mah 25c 2s lipo pack will provide 125 amps continuous. A typical Nimh is hard pressed to provide more than 30-40 amps peak. Amps = Torque, Torque = excelleration.
