Tyco receiver antenna problem

Hi, I have replaced the stock antenna(the circular piece of wire) with a long piece of wire. I hoped that I would get good range, but I'm only getting about 5 inches!

I then touched the stock antenna against the antenna terminal and got about 30 feet of range. I then soldered the stock antenna onto the terminal and got about 5 inches of range again!

I have no idea what's wrong with it. I ANYBODY can help with a pic of what they did, or if they have had this problem-what they did. I really need help. Thanks
