Yeah, it's a botfly larvae. I had to remove a couple of them when I was in Honduras.

No, I think he's quite serious. I've met many folks who, while stationed in Hondo, had to have larvae removed. I've known one guy who had 30 or 40 scars on his back from when he passed out drinking and became a living hive for botfly larvae.

And when they took out that guy's larvae, they all stumbled around slappin' each other on the back, bumpin' into stuff, and throwin' up.

No, I'm quite serious. I was a medic in the Army and I had a couple of my soldiers come to me with a big knot that was oozing. I never pulled one straight out like in the video, but we had a few different ways of getting them out. I haven't personally had one, but I've removed them from about half a dozen different people. Usually where there's one, there's one or two more.

That's why we used to wear flea collars on our wrists and ankles when we'd go into the jungle/woods. One time I was in a bar after getting back from the field and I was talking to this girl and she asked, "Are those flea collars on your wrists?". It's hard to look cool when you forgot to remove your flea collars.

So Tex... the Army-issue high strength bug juice just didn't cut it, huh? I didn't serve, and I can't remember the designation, but guys I knew who served would look at my bottle of DEET at a cookout or something and sneer at the wimpy percentage off the DPT (or whatever the active ingredient was). "The stuff they gave us in 'Nam was twice that... and still it wouldn't always keep 'em off of ya... and when it was monsoon season, it would wash off and the rest of the time, it would SWEAT off ya."
Or did y'all use the flea collars in addition to the juice?

They would give us "Chigg Away", but it stinks like hell and you have to keep reapplying it constantly. With the flea collars, you just put them on and forget about them, literally. We'd buy three of the dog sized ones and cut two of them in half and attach them with zip ties to our ankles and wrists. The third went around your neck. It seems weird and gross at first, but when the first time you get eat up with bugs you learn to love them.

Chigg Away didn't work for crap! For flies and mosquitos, I also stuck with Skin So Soft, you smelled pretty, but the flying bugs stayed away from you. Around my sleeping hooch, I'd sprinkle a little bit of CS powder (same stuff as tear gas). It'd not only keep the creepy crawly bugs away, but any animals as well. Funny though, I'd always wake up with a slight runny nose but my sinuses would be clear all day long.
Hartz flea collars were the bomb in desert scrub areas like Arizona, and worked great against ticks. We'd put them in our pantlegs, wrists, and one in the helmet.

Take a look at the 1:9 scale F-14 project on RCUniverse done by the Korean master artist Jai Young Shim. He's been building his in the house. He has pics of the fuselage leaned up against the living room wall. Here's a pic of it mostly completed, on his living room floor. (Hopefully, the link will work)
