Is the battery connected? May sound like a silly question, but it needs power. The USB connection doesn't provide power to the ESC to program it.

The USB connection does infact power the ESC for programming, you shouldn't have the drive battery connected when you're using the phx-link/mambalink.

How about we agree that we are both right.
At the bottom of page 1 ( http://www.castlecreations.com/docum...er%20Guide.pdf):

a. If your Phoenix brushless controller has the BEC DISABLED, you will need to have an external battery to power the Phoenix controller. If you have the BEC enabled, you will not need an external battery to power you Phoenix controller.

Now, on the Mamba 6800 setup I use with my 18T/M18, right out of the box I have always had to have the battery plugged in and the ESC turned on to program the ESC using the software.
Similiar thread.

If the BEC is disabled then you would need some way of powering the Mamba, I agree with that. However its not a normal practice to disable the BEC circuit on a Mamba as the BEC circuitry can handle the load of a receiver and single smaller servo without an problems. On the larger phoenix controllers people do sometimes disable the BEC and use an external one because of a very high input voltage and/or because they are running 3/4/5 high current drain servos.
Anyway, back on point, if you have not disabled your BEC circuit and still need to provide power to the Mamba/Mambalink using your drive battery something is wrong with the USB power from your computer or there is a problem with the Mamba or phxlink(mambalink).
