Motor Overheating
I bought a RTR TC4 a few days ago (I've had a rustler for a few years, but this is my first Touring Car), i have only ran it about 7-8 times, and it was fine at first as i was getting 20+ minute runs on it with orion 3000mAh batteries. but now the motor overheats (so much that the esc shuts it off) after about 6 or 7 minutes. I havent changed any of the parts yet, so i dont know what the problem could be. any help?

First, make sure your pinion/spur mesh isn't too tight. Second, make sure the drivetrain isn't binding (remove the motor and spin the wheels). Because it's new, it's possible something might've shifted.

The temperature of the motor wont turn off the esc, since all that is attached to the motor from the esc are the + and - wires which send the motor the electricity. Where are you running your TC4? I have seen some rtr tc4's race on carpet where the motor severely overheats, but in the street the motor should stay at a fine temperature. Got to your lhs and ask them to cut the comm and replace the brushes for you. But before you do that, make sure that there isn't any binding in the drivetrain. To do this, take off the motor, and try turning the wheels. If this is hard, check to make sure that nothing is stuck that would cause this. If the drivetrain is free, there is something either wrong with your motor or batteries. How have you been charging and discharging them?

I've read in the TC4 thrread that adding the fan kit or just the fan vent without the fans can lower the motor temp by 20F but doesn't that let little rocks and stuff fly into the motor or collect crap around it?

Is that the kit motor and radio gear that came with the TC4 or something you are using from another vehicle. What pinion gear are you running with it.

Well I can say this , When I got my first RTR TC3, the LRP Runner that was in it was crap, since then I run Novak GT7's in all my cars. Power starts to go down I cut the comm. and use new brushes or cut the brush. Gearing has alot to do with performance and hot running motors. I run in 110 deg. parking lot club races and have yet to have a car shut down , Do as these guys have suggested to see if that helps , RED

In response to highroller, i am using all of the stock equipment right now. I'm thinking it might be either a bad motor or something caught in one of the diffs or bearings. I am almost positive it is not the brushes or the comm because i have not run it enough for that to make a difference. ill just clean it out and see if that helps. Then go from there. thanks.

Associated had something posted on their site about problems with the kit supplied 17turn motors causing thermal shutdown of the LRP runner is that is what you have.
I would guess to say that the suppled pinion may be a bit to tall for what most guys are using the TC4 for. I did away with the kit spur anyway and use a 78 to 85 spur depending on type of class I run - the standard 72 to me doesn't allow motor to accelerate smoothly.

It is. Whether or not that's your problem I don't know, but the motors that come in AE's RTRs are absolute garbage. Don't get me wrong, I like AE, but those 15 turn or 17 turn or whatever things they put in there just SUCK.

Easy fix and solution. The speed control ( crap ), and the motor it comes with a total p.o.s. , just change out the motor first then see.
