Just put on my new GRP tires and they look great! Also put a JP2 pipe on, but now I'm having problems with my clutch. My lhs said that the clutch melted because my wheels spin even with the idle set the lowest. Arent the shoes aluminum? Will get pics of my GT soon...

Here is my clutch setup. Go this route if you need to re-do the clutch:

Remove and replace stock flywheel with Kyosho 3-Shoe 34mm Blue Anodized Flywheel [KYOIFW110]

New flywheel slides over the brass collet that is on the shaft.

Now, slide on three alum shoes like these, with the tiny washers supplied, placing the washers between the shoes and flywheel. shoes:

Kyosho Aluminum Clutch Shoes (3)
[KYOIFW136]

I recommend these springs:

Kyosho 0.95mm Clutch Springs (3)
[KYOIFW53M]

After you've installed the flywheel, you must install a clutch. You might think that installing a 3- or 4-shoe clutch is tricky, but after you've done it once, you'll be a pro.

First, slip the springs into the shoes, and slide the first shoe over any of the metal pegs (making sure the shoes are installed with the trailing edge to the right). The most difficult part of installing the clutch shoe is snapping the spring over the clutch nut; it's difficult to do because of the limited space but relatively easy when you use a small, flat-head screwdriver. Push the clutch shoe down with your thumb while you push downward on the spring with the flat-head driver. You may have to pull the trailing edge of the shoe away from the clutch nut slightly to snap it down completely.

Your clutch should look like this once installed, and the three clutch shoes should be hard to move, as the springs hold them down tight. Imagine the centrifigul force spinning the clutch shoes around until they expand out and engage the bell, thus engaging the gears/tranny.

For extra reference material, please locate the Inferno SP1 or SP2 buggy manuals at www.kyoshoamerica.com, where you will find kit buidling instructions that show you how to align the springs with the shoes.

If switching the clutch when swapping to an aftermarket engine, be sure to grab a clutch nut like this one. Note the bevelled front, which enables you to slide each spring into the groove of the nut:

OFNA Clutch Nut, SG Shaft (Jammin X1)
[OFN10098]

amainhobbies.com

See Inferno 777 or 7.5 parts and/or upgrades (search the part #s above I've included and they will pop up for sure). The clutch shown above is tried and true on the Inferno buggy circuit. It is strong, won't engage too early or too late and will let the engine idle nicely.

Thanks, looks like I'll be buying some new stuff. Does it sound to you that my clutch is the problem? My wheels spin a decent speed when the car is ideling. My lhs said my shoes melted, but I thought stock shoes are aluminum. Do you think I need a new clutch?

Does anyone know the size of the standard shocks (overall length, shock length, shock body diameter shock body size etc.) or if they know what other shocks fit?

Cheers

Compare Kyosho Inferno GT with Ofna GTP

I would love a side-by-side road test of these two cars, Kyosho Inferno GT and Ofna GTP, now that Ofna has a two-speed tranny. Better still a rubber tire, tub chassis 1/8 scale racing class.

The gt would outperform the gtp, remember, its like an mp7.5(6 time ifmar world champion) Against an ofna lx buggy.

The stock clutch is crap anyway. You could lower your idle and/or richen the low end setting. If the low end is too lean, the idle could be set very low and the engine might still race enough at idle to engage the clutch and spin the wheels. If you hold the car still, the clutch shoes burn against the clutch bell, heat up, and melt themselves or the bearings, etc etc.

You might have had weak clutch springs that could not keep the shoes from engaging the clutch bell even at idle.

I know a guy who gets the heaviest springs and lightest shoes possible on his cars so that then engine can actually rev up and NOT engage the clutch and move the car for a while. He sits there, blipping the throttle and the darn car doesn't move until the throttle is at what seems like 40% or better. When he races, he never worries about his car stalling waiting for a green flag!

He has to be more aggressive on the throttle coming out of turns to actually get any power to the wheels, but when it comes on, it goes like heck because the engine is spooled up into it's sweet spot. This is just an example of how playing with shoes and springs can alter how you idle and accelerate or drive a course.
