Waterproofing 101

Ive been wondering how to waterproof my rigs for a few days now. Ive decided today to do it after one of mine fell into water after it tumbled down a hill. Thankfully after a bit of drying out with a hair dryer it all works. Ive done a short write up to help the people who cant seem to understand how its done. You will need:

Balloons
Zip Ties
Grease
Velcro strips

First Rig up Scale Trail Dodge:

Put your esc, receiver, and battery in a balloon. Your battery might not fit but I am using 7 cell AA packs so there was no problem.

This is the battery and the second pic shows the battery mounted on the right along with my receiver on the left.

I then did the same to the esc and velcroed it to the chassis rail. There was grease after the first zip tie and then another zip tie on both the esc and receiver to prevent water from entering.

What it all looks like:

When I was about to start the second rig my cat thought the balloons on the Dodge might taste good:

Next rig up- SW2:

I did the same thing I did to the first rig to the Super Rooster, receiver and battery in the second rig. I didn't put grease in the receiver balloon because the receiver is water/fuel resistant already. I just put 3 zip ties just in case.

The balloon on the top is the receiver and the one on the bottom is the esc.

Here it is complete:

And the new shell for it too:

I didn't do anything to either of my servos.....I will put an oring and some grease on the output gear before I attach the arm. The servo has been in water before with no ill affects so I think it will be ok. This should be tested tomorrow if time permits.

Enjoy!

Very good James. One thing I've noticed with balloons though, is over time, water and condensation somehow STILL gets in the things, so it wouldn't hurt to check them once every month or so and change them if need be (depends on how often you run them).

If you're real ambitious...you can always epoxy coat the ESC and Rx (though, for the Rx, make sure that's the ONLY channel you'll ever run...). Silicone or petroleum based sealants work well too from my own experience as well (especially silicone for sealing up the seams on servo cases). It's not "as permanent" as the epoxy either, which is a plus.

Electric: I figured Id test it out like shown and see what happens. I dont think i will be fully submerging the Ford...its mainly for rock crawling. The Dodge might get the full dunk though

PS- smiles work fine for me......................and I have 2 cats

Oh, it should work fine. I've just had problems with the waterballoon thing when I was running brushed ESCs (especially when it's humid out down here). Just a small note of caution.

I have 3....

I used to put ziplock bags on my electronics when playing in the snow. If you do one on the servo, you can just screw the horn right onto the baggie. It actually makes it fit a little tighter and seals REALLY well ... just make sure to leave a little slack in there so it can move.
Otherwise, why not put one of those little "silica gel - DO NOT EAT" moisture-absorber things in there? It may not help with all of it, but it ought to keep the humidity out quite nicely.

That's actually a good idea. I forgot about those little silica things; probably cause I was too busy eating them.... (<- see what they do to you?)
