can crystals go bad and cause transmission issues?

i just received a 75mhz AM futaba magnum junior in a package deal, and i am having some issues with it. it came with 2 identical receivers, futaba fp-r112je. it only came with one 75mhz crystal set, channel 86.

the problem is, once everything is hooked up, nothing works right. it will only move the servo in one direction on the steering channel, nothing i can adjust or set will let it turn equally in both directions. if i put the servo on the throttle channel, it doesn't work at all. i tested the servo with another radio system, works perfectly.

i tried the same crystals in bothe receivers, so i highly doubt both receivers have the same problem. which leads me to believe there is a problem with either the crystals, or the transmitter itself. it is old, but the magnum jr is in excellent condition and i dont see a reason why it would be defective. also, if i use the servo reversing switch for the steering, the servo will respond to the opposite travel of the steering wheel, so that pretty much rules out a bad transmitter.

basically what i'm asking is: can the crystals cause partial communication loss to the reciever?
